Welcome to Muzica imaginară!
Welcome @ newsletter!
We will attempt here to document here Octavian Nemescu’s Imaginary Music series, unearthing & exploring the possibilities of the ultimate solution for music in isolation, from a 80 years old (this year) Romanian composer! Archival and creative approaches, to follow.
While this new genre, as Nemescu calls it, was developed from at least 1975 and was given some theoretical context over the years in certain specialty national publications, Muzica imaginara / Imaginary Music remains a largely unknown and elitist project, with possibly “visibility” outside the guild of Romanian contemporary music makers. Until now?
Its radical premise, contemporary to the rise of interest in Fluxus and other immaterial art experiments, oriental meditation practices or graphic music scores, to mention just a few possible influences, presents itself to us today as the perfect palliative for our increasingly uncertain present - of course, in relation to the lost/redefined “togetherness” of live music experience.
Our project aims to both educate and instigate, presenting previously unavailable translations and archival documents, comissioning texts, sounds and videos further explaining the concept, as well as materials from those closer to Nemscu, fellow composers old and young, for an entire constellation of auxiliary ideas and creative endeavors.
It is our hope that this playfully/conceptual approach will at once bring more visibility, both locally and internationally, to a real pioneer of what was called avant-garde music that should continue to inspire future generations of creative minds. Beyond academia, Octavian Nemescu’s music should still go a long way, and our project is dedicated to his aniversary!
Our project has been made possible at the initiative of Octav Avramescu, is funded through the Acces programme of the The Romanian Ministry of Culture, and developed in association with Unearthing the Music network, co-financed by Creative Europe.
In the meantime, tell your friends!
